Highlights, Scores and Recaps for Wednesday, March 8th, 2017

Doral Academy held court in the lead of 7A-16 on Wednesday with a 9-4 home victory over TERRA Institute. Lency Delgado was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and winning pitcher Chauncey Nunez struck out eight in four innings of work.

The Firebirds had nine hits in all. Jonathan Fernandez was also 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs and Eduardo Cruz went 2-for-3 with a double and a run.

Alex Garcia paced the Wolves (2-5, 0-1) with a home run and two RBIs, and Danny Labrador went 2-for-3.

The Firebirds (5-2) are now 2-0 and well ahead in the district, with a big showdown with Belen Jesuit coming up next week. The teams played three times last season and the Wolverines won all three matchups on their way to a trip to the state final four, after Doral ended their season the previous year on the way to its last district title.

While these district games are important, Firebirds manager Ralph Suarez is working to make sure his guys keep perspective to what the ultimate goal for this season is.

“It is great to get out to a fast start, but more important to play our best baseball in May,” Suarez said.
