Daily Recaps For Miami-Dade County For Thursday, March 7th
Some teams broke losing streaks, while others extended long winning streaks. Here is a recap of Thursday’s action…
Westland Hialeah 7, Hialeah-Miami Lakes 4 – The Wildcats picked up a big district win Thursday over the Trojans. Antonio Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Luis Corrales and Christian Munoz each chipped in with two base knocks. Munoz had two RBIs, and Corrales one for Westland, who ran their record to 5-2 (4-2). The Wildcats now sit two games behind district leader Mater Academy.
Doral 3, LaSalle 1 – Doral closed the gap in 4A-15 with a big win over LaSalle. The Firebirds were led by Alejandro Juvier’s two hits and two runs. Miquel Casanueva had his fifth RBI of the season for Doral. The win evened the Firebirds district record at 2-2, while handing LaSalle their first district defeat.
Ferguson 13, Coral Park 1 – Victor Morrell threw four strong innings to improve his record to 3-1. The Falcons pounded out 15 hits, including two each by Anthony Tucker, Kevin Torres, Chris Bec, Javier Valdes, and Daniel Rivero. Valde’s hits were both doubles, and Jose Brito went 4-for-4 with a double. Ferguson’s offesnive explosion came off the heels of three games in which the team only scored three runs combined.
Killian 8, Coral Reef 4 – The Cougars moved into a first-place tie with Palmetto in 8A-16 with their win over the Barracudas. Killian’s Mike Perez was 2-for-3, with four RBIs. Gil Polanco added two hits and two runs, and Ernie Penton got the save with three innings of shutout relief. Up next for the Cougars is non-county Vero Beach.
Miami Sunset 10, Braddock 2 – The Knights continued to roll, moving their district record to a perfect 5-0. Gus Garcia had three hits and three RBIs. Michael Centeno added a triple and two RBIs, while Danilo De Armas and Alfredo Isler each drove in a run. Up next for Sunset is a district showdown Tuesday with the only other undefeated team in 8A-15, Columbus. The Knights will take a seven game winning streak into that game.
Varela 11, Palmetto 1 – The Vipers won their third straight by breaking out the lumber again Thursday. Varela has scored 22 runs in their last three games. JC Garcia led the offense in this one, going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and three runs. Joshua Rosquet went the distance, scattering five hits.
Belen Jesuit 15, Northwestern 0 – David Villa had two hits and David Guevara knocked in three for Belen. The Wolverines won their second in a row after breaking a three game losing streak on Tuesday. A district match-up with Homestead is on tap for Tuesday.
Dade Christian 8, Miami Senior 2 – The Crusaders have now won three of their last four after another impressive showing against the Stigarees. Anthony Munoz went six innings for the win, allowing one earned run and striking out seven. Munoz also went 2-for-3 with a double at the dish for Dade Christian. Luis Reyes added two hits. The Crusaders moved above .500 (5-4) for the first time since the third game of the season.
