Miami-Dade County was 3-for-3 Tuesday in regional final attempts against teams from out of the region as Monsignor Pace, Westland Hialeah and Belen Jesuit joined Columbus in winning to punch their tickets to state.
In the only game between two teams from Miami-Dade, Columbus edged Coral Park 2-1 to put itself in position to win back-to-back state titles. The Explorers (20-9) face Alonso at 1 p.m. May 20th in a semifinal and are seeking their third state title in school history.
Belen Jesuit won its second consecutive game in extras as it edged Dwyer 5-4 in eight innings to advance to the state final four for the third time in school history and first time since 2007 when the Wolverines fell in the semifinals. Albert Maury earned the win for Belen (19-11), which scored in the top of the eighth to win Tuesday and will be trying for its first state title.
Pace defeated Pompano Beach 9-3 behind a five-run fourth inning and a strong pitching performance by Chris Rodriguez to advance to the state final four for the first time since 2013. The Spartans (26-4), who will be trying for their seventh state title and first since 2006, take on Bishop Moore (20-10) in a semifinal at 7 p.m. May 18th.
Westland Hialeah dispatched Atlantic 3-0, but needed nine innings to do it as the Wildcats (21-9) scored all of their runs in the top of the ninth to advance to state semifinals for the first time. Giovanni Arriera got the win for Westland Hialeah, which will play Steinbrenner at 7 p.m. May 20th.
