Coral Gables Grinds Out 3-2 Win Over Miami Beach For Fourth Win
Coral Gables earned a gritty 3-2 win over Miami Beach on Thursday to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Trent Bryan got things started for Miami Beach in the third, getting on base with a bunt before stealing second and coming home on an error. Miami Beach hit three singles in the inning but scored only one run and left two men on base.
Nico Zambrano pitched a complete game for Miami Beach and allowed just one hit to Alex Pinero, who sent a towering shot past the left field fence to tie the game at 1-1 at the end of the fourth.
“He threw me his fastball and I just turned on it,” Pinero said.
Pinero helped his team out again in the sixth when his sacrifice fly to center field sent Jesus Pineda across the plate after tagging up at third.
Coral Gables stacked up another run after a misplayed grounder allowed Antonio Rodriguez to score, giving them a 3-1 lead.
Luke Sorensen came in to relieve in the fifth after Coral Gables starting pitcher JeanCarlos Rodriguez gave up a single to David Weiss, the sixth hit Rodriguez gave up. Sorensen was able to get out the jam by striking out the next three batters.
Just as it seemed Miami Beach could climb back into it in the sixth, Coral Gables coach Phillip Wisser decided to intentionally walk Yovani Sosa, loading up the bases with merely one out. But the coach’s move led to Daniel Angel grounding into a 4-6-3 double play to get Gables out of the inning unharmed.
With Miami Beach’s chances of rallying fading away in the seventh, Leoni Lamarra singled down the right-base line driving in David Weiss, bring them within one. But Coral Gables relief pitcher Luke Sorensen got two more strikeouts to end the game 3-2. Sorensen finished the game with six strikeouts through three innings.
Miami Beach finished with nine hits, eight more than Coral Gables. Leoni Lamarra led the team, getting on base three time with two singles. Miami beach had six players record a hit.
The Cavaliers played defensive smart ball to get their fourth win on the early season.
“We did what we had to do to get the W,” Wisser said. “It’s a district win, and a win’s a win.”
