Jake Weiss, Miami Country Day Hold Dade Christian Scoreless
Miami Country Day picked up its sixth win of the season behind the arm of Jake Weiss on Friday night.
Weiss kept Dade Christian in check the whole game, not allowing a run and striking out 15 while Country Day piled up runs to beat Dade Christian 8-0 in District 3A-15 play.
“This was fun,” Country Day coach Paul Barrios said. “Jake’s been like that all year, and our pitching has carried us. Today we swung the bat. This is a good win for us.”
Alexander Brody got things started for Country Day in the second inning when he took Anthony Munoz’s pitch pass the left-field wall for a solo home run. Joshua Canabal dashed home from third after a wild pitch in the third to give Country Day a 2-0 lead, but sophomore catcher Anthony Martel threw out two runners to get out of the inning.
Martel and Dade Christian had their best chance to score in the fourth. Weiss walked Martel for one of his only two walks on the night. Martel stole second, but Weiss recorded two strikeouts and a groundout to keep the shutout alive. Martel had two of Dade Christian’s three hits.
Weiss hit a double up the middle to lead things off for Country Day in the fifth.
“He threw a curve ball, and I hit it with the end of the bat,” Weiss said. “I just got lucky. We needed to keep hitting and just play defense.”
Canabal followed and was ushered to first after getting hit by a pitch. Eli Laslovits drove in courtesy-runner Carter Weiss with an RBI double to right field. Canabal and Elie ran home after Adam Seif knocked one high into the dark night. Dade Christian was unable to control its free fall and gave Country Day a five-run lead.
The scoring train continued into the sixth with Weiss finding his second hit of the game for a single. A couple of batters later, it was Laslovits again with an RBI single, which slammed into first base before rolling away into the outfield. Laslovist finished with two hits and two RBI, getting on base all four of his at-bats. Laslovits came home after Andrew Holtz popped up a sacrifice fly to right field, giving Country Day their final run of the night.
Before Dade Christian could even attempt to rally, Jake Weiss shut the door in the final inning, striking out all three batters. Weiss fanned 15 of the 25 batters he faced, giving up three hits and three walks.
It had been several years since Country Day had beaten Dade Christian at their home turf.
“Finally we beat them,” Weiss said “I had never won on this field against them.”
