Mater Lakes Academy Stays Perfect in 3A District 15 Play With 8-2 Win
The bats were hot for Mater Lakes Academy at Florida Memorial University, where it hosted Miami Country Day on Wednesday. The Bears picked up its 11th win of the season, while Miami Country Day picked up its first district loss of the season. Mater Lakes now leads 3A District 15 with a perfect 4-0 record.
“This is a new district for us,” Mater Lakes coach Cesar Temes said after the game. “We’re looking to win districts, so this was a big win for us.”
Mater Lakes Academy got the ball rolling early as Vincente Amor drove in Daniel Morales with a deep sacrifice fly. Mater Lakes tallied on two more runs before Miami Country Day pitcher Bryor Weiss worked himself out of the inning.
Morales increased the lead for the Bears in the second with a RBI double bringing in Abraham Ortega.
Carlos Lopez pitched a complete game for Mater Lakes, but in the third Miami Country Day stirred things up after Lopez gave up a walk and two singles to load the bases. Jake Weiss then chopped a tough grounder towards short that was mishandled, bringing in Alexander Brody for the team’s first run. Lopez then walked Joshua Canabal with the bases loaded to put the game at 5-2. But Lopez pushed through and struck out two before getting Country Day to pop up to end the inning with no further damage.
Lopez allowed just two more hits against Country Day the rest of the game and he recorded five strikeouts in the last three innings.
“I found my groove in the fourth,” Lopez said. “I felt a little rusty in the first three innings, but I got it done.”
Later in the game Anthony Rondon got on base with a single to right field and stole second for Mater Lakes. George Gonzales brought in Rondon with a RBI double, but catcher Andrew Holtz captured Gonzales at third on a stolen base attempt. Alessandro Lima then lined a pitch to right field for a triple, and he came home after the Miami Country Day pitcher was called for a balk, giving Mater Lakes a five-run lead.
“We haven’t been a real good away team this year,” Miami Country Day coach Paul Barrios said. “This is our first district loss, but we play them again next week at home, so lets see if we can straighten that out.”
