Daily Recap for Miami-Dade Games on Monday, February 11th
The season has finally arrived, and that meant some big performances around Miami on Monday. Here are the highlights from opening day…
Archbishop Carroll 9, Champagnat 2 – The Bulldogs started their 2013 campaign with an offensive explosion. Will Navarro went 2-for-2 with an RBI, Alex Lugo was 1-for-2 with a run and two RBIs, and Danny Acevedo contributed two RBIs.
Miami Norland 17, North Miami 7 – Sensi Jarvis only allowed two earned runs in six innings of work as the Vikings picked up their first victory of the season. Jarvis struck out 11 in the winning effort. Felix De La Cruz provided the offensive punch, delivering a two-run homer and a double on the day.
Goleman 11, Miami Beach 1 – Erick Delgado began the season strong offensively, hitting a double and driving in three in the Gators’ season-opening win. Kevin Gomez went 2-for-3 with a stolen base, and Cory Garrastazu added a hit and an RBI. On the mound, Christian Abad went five innings for the win, striking out six along the way.
Gulliver Prep 11, Miami Springs 3 – Although the Raiders picked up their first win of the season, the Golden Hawks were not without their highlights. Domingo Cedano hit a two-run homer run for Miami Springs, which is looking to build its program under new manager Willie Vazquez.
South Miami 5, Coral Gables 1 – The Cobras sent notice early in the season that they would be a team to be taken seriously as they defeated the Cavaliers Monday. Danny Garmendia stole the show, throwing a complete game with 11 strikeouts.
Varela 11, Miami Senior 1 – The Vipers are off to a 1-0 start helped largely by the arm of Juan Pimentel. The senior went five innings and struck out 12 on the way to his first win of the season.
Southwest 7, Palmetto 3 – In what may have been the game of the day in Miami, Luis Gutierrez broke a 3-3 tie with a three-run home run in the seventh inning to give the Eagles the win. Chris Mourelle went 2-for-4 at the dish and threw five strong innings for Southwest. Carlos Pena added two doubles for the Eagles.
