South Dade Dominates Ferguson In Season Opener
South Dade always has been known to be a powerhouse team in all aspects of the game, and that’s exactly what it displayed Tuesday at home in the season opener.
The Buccaneers continued their fierce reputation after defeating visiting Ferguson 15-0.
South Dade started getting hits early in the game and drove in five runs in the first inning after leaving Ferguson scoreless. The Bucs made some good contact coming in, allowing their first four in their lineup to get on base and make it home before Ferguson’s starting pitcher, Victor Morrell, got a grip of the situation and put out the next three.
The game stayed quiet in the second inning, neither pitcher allowing a hit or run to escape him, but South Dade just came back for more in the third, starting the inning with a home run over the center-field wall off the bat of catcher Sean Castro.
Ferguson’s manager saw the beginning of this upset and took out his ace for his number two, Chris Gomez, who started off the inning by knocking off the next two batters. This didn’t stop South Dade from bringing another run, though. Gabriel Cruz, Austin Allende and Jori Rodriguez had consecutive base hits, bringing in Cruz on of Rodriguez’s single.
South Dade’s veteran manager, John Burnside, was happy to see his guys perform well and capitalize on Ferguson’s cold arms.
“We just stayed aggressive.” Said veteran manager for the Buccaneers, John Burnside. “Their guy had troubled finding the strike zone, so we got to sit on fastballs a lot.”
Even when the Bucs marked another 8 runs on the scoreboard, which totaled the final score 15-0, it was clear that the bats were not the highlight of this baseball game. It was the talented arm belonging to lefty pitcher Adam Roush, who managed to keep poise, control and speed for the five innings that the game lasted.
“Roush on the mound was tough,” Falcons Manager Jose Novas said. “We didn’t make any adjustments to him, but normally we’re a much better defensive club and to give five runs in the first inning is not in our character, and it just seemed to snowball after that.”
Roush was extolled in the beginning of the year for his natural movement with the ball and endurance on the plate and demonstrated his potential by closing the night with nine strike outs and only allowing one hit during five innings.
