Archbishop Carroll Snaps Losing Streak, Tops Jackson
Archbishop Carroll broke from a four-game losing streak Wednesday by defeating District 4A-14 opponent Miami Jackson 7-5.
The Bulldogs (3-4, 2-1) have been struggling with their opponents the past couple of weeks, but Wednesday, they showed that they are not to be taken lightly after answering every run the Generals made with one of their own.
Although the Generals (2-6, 0-3) stood their ground and did not allow any room for comfort for the Bulldogs, Archbishop’s bats did not heed to Jackson’s defense and continued to execute important plays to keep the game to their favor.
“The first three innings we had an error in each and they capitalized,” Jackson Manager Julio Mendoza said. “However, we showed fight in us, and we stayed in the ball game.”
The Generals did keep the game close, even though the Bulldogs had a 5-2 lead by the fourth. The persistence of both teams made the next few innings a dog fight.
After Archbishop Manager Jorge Gutierrez made his first pitching change in the bottom of the fifth, the Generals revamped their offense and caught the Bulldogs off guard with an infield home run by Jomilson Alvarez.
But the Bulldogs didn’t allow the Generals’ run to bother their pitcher Adam Young, who had two strikeouts before the run and had an assist after to end the inning.
Besides the fifth inning, the Bulldogs scored at least one run in each inning. The Generals, although keeping up with the Bulldogs, couldn’t stay consistent on the field, amounting to six errors.
Gutierrez saw the ineffective fielding and took advantaged of it tactically, signaling off runners to dance between bases to throw off the pitcher’s concentration, such as when Alex Lugo took a huge lead on second and coaxed Ibrahim to try to get him out. Silwany threw too high to the second baseman and allowed Lugo to get into scoring position and eventually come in.
Silwany showed impressive endurance with his arm despite his high pitch count.
The game played the same tune for most of the seven innings. The Generals tried to come closer to tying with the Bulldogs, but they made small errors that allowed extra bases to be taken. Ultimately, it was Archbishop’s ability to execute on the field that kept the Generals at bay.
