Mediavilla Fans 13 As Mater Academy Tops Gulliver Prep
Mike Mediavilla was fighting more than just the Raiders on Monday night. With temperatures as low as 52 degrees, Mediavilla was able to stay warm as he overwhelmed Gulliver Prep with 13 strikeouts in leading .
Mater Academy scored two runs early and played tough defense as it defeated the Raiders 2-0.
Mater Academy improved to 6-0 and has outscored opponents 49-2.
“Our pitchers are going to keep us in every game.” Mater Academy Manager Eddie Gorriz said. “This was Michael’s best outing this season. He was amazing on the mound.”
Mediavilla, who faced just two batters over the minimum, struck out the Raiders’ leadoff hitter to start the game, but Gulliver’s Henry Hernandez was able to connect on a pitch for a double. Brent Diaz followed with a difficult chop shot for a base hit, sending Hernandez to third. That was the closest the Raiders got to scoring as Mediavilla found the strike zone three times to end the inning, Mediavilla gave up his only two hits in the first inning.
Danny Reyes got things started offensively for the Lions. Reyes led off with a single up the middle before Kevin Abraham was walked. JC Escarra singled to right field, loading the bases for Deyvid Silva, Silva held his bat at the plate and was granted a trip to first base, bringing in Reyes for the games’ first score.
Kevin Abraham cracked a double to right field to start the third inning. Mike Escarra came in to pinch-run for Abraham and moved into scoring position when his brother, JC Escarra, executed a sacrifice fly. Chris Cabrera followed with a shot to right center field for a double, sending Escarra home for the Lions’ second run of the game.
Mater Academy continued to play dominating defense. Mediavilla, using his curve ball, recorded two strikeouts in the top of forth, but he was at his zenith in the fifth inning when he sat three batters down with three straight strikeouts on 11 pitches.
“I was just trying to beat them inside, and when I got ahead, I’d hit them with the curve ball,” Mediavilla said. “I started to feel confident. I knew everybody was helping me out, and it made me feel confident with every pitch I threw.”
