Yordy Cabrera Does It All In Jackson’s Win Over Norland
Tuesday afternoon the Miami Jackson Generals traveled to Scott Park for a non-district game against the Norland Vikings. The Generals sent out freshman Right-hander Yordy Cabrera to face Norland’s junior righty Brandon Carter.
Jackson received excellent pitching from Cabrera, who went six innings, giving up one earned run on three hits with six strikeouts and five walks.
“I just try and make the right pitches. That is what I did today,” said Cabrera.
At the plate, Cabrera led the charge for the Generals as a dual threat, connecting for two triples and five RBIs to support his own cause. Kerlin Mateo and Francisco Brenes each accounted for an RBI each.
“Once we brought our intensity up the game seemed to become easier for our guys,” said Miami Jackson Manager Rafael Jiron. “What can I say about our starting pitcher; he was great today.”
The first, second and third innings were scoreless. Nobody reached scoring position until the third inning, when Norland loaded the bases. But Cabrera used a very impressive curveball to get out of the jam unscathed.
In the top of the fourth the Generals (8-7) broke through by scoring two runs. Dariel Santana reached first on a sharply hit ball that was misplayed, and Bryan Valle followed with a walk. Cabrera then connected for a triple to left that scored both base runners.
Norland’s Brandon Carter cruised through the fifth and retired the side in order. It wasn’t until the sixth when the Generals broke the game open, erupting for seven runs. The inning started with a Santana single, a ground-rule double from Valle, and then an infield single off the bat of Lester Ayerlis to load the bases. Again it was Cabrera coming up big, as he cleared the bases with another triple.
Jackson began to get some separation then. Ernesto Ortiz walked and Kerlin Mateo knocked them both in with a triple of his own. Another run came across the plate thanks to an RBI single from Francisco Brenes, putting the Generals ahead 9-1.
The Vikings (5-5) answered back with a run in their half of the inning. After junior Max Gordon drew the first of two walks on the day, a perfectly-executed hit-and-run by Mehkai West placed runners on first and third for red-hot hitter Khalil Harris. Harris drove in Gordon on a hard-hit double into the gap, but was left stranded on second when Cabrera finished off his day with a swinging strikeout.
The bottom half provided an exciting finish from the Vikings. A Jhon Cruz one-out double started a rally bid for the Vikings. Roderick Lucas walked, and both runners eventually advanced to second and third on passed balls. A laser off the bat of Dimitri Duverger brought in both runners to cut into the Hawks’ lead. Max Gordon provided the last exciting play for the Vikings with an RBI single. But that would be all for the Vikings, as the reliever Ayerlis recorded the final crucial outs to quell the comeback bid.
