Columbus Tops Gables For 8A-15 Championship
Columbus defeated Coral Gables in the 8A-15 title game for the second consecutive season, capitalizing on a five-run third inning to win 6-1 on Thursday.
The win snapped the Cavaliers’ 13-game winning streak and extended the Explorers’ to 10.
Elih Marrero got the Cavaliers (18-6) off to a strong start with a solo home run in the top of the first, but the Explorers came right back in the second inning and evened it when Dominick Reyes tripled in Hernan Sardinas.
Columbus (22-5) broke open the game the next inning, plating five runs that held up as final runs of the game. Jackie Urbaez and Alain Santana singled before Chris Vinson walked. Sardinas reached on a base on balls, bringing in Urbaez, who went 2-for-3 with a run. Nick Rocha followed with a single to score Santana, and Vinson came home on Gabe Rivera’s single to center field. Reyes, who finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, then smacked a two-run single to center field, driving in Sadrinas and Rocha.
The Cavs had a pair of runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings but couldn’t capitalize as Santana pitched five and two-thirds innings, striking out five to earn just his second win of the season. Chris Coipel struck out three in his one and one-third innings of relief.
