Florida Christian Starts Season With 3-1 Win Over TERRA
Florida Christian is hosting the 2016 Adidas Diamond Classic, and on Wednesday evening they used some of that home cooking to open their season with a 3-1 victory over the TERRA Institute.
The Patriots used a two-headed monster of Danny San Pedro and John Kenney to shut down the Wolves. San Pedro went the first five innings and picked up the win, allowing only three hits and striking out three. Kenney threw the final two innings, picking up the save.
The Florida Christian offense was paced by Alex Cerda, who had two hits and an RBI. Brandon Chinea also added a hit and an RBI for the Patriots.
There was only one inning of consequence offensively, the third, when Florida Christian put up all three of their runs. Lead-off hitter Ruben Someillan started the inning with a single, and moved to second on a wild pitch. A passed ball moved Someillan to third, and a Brandon Chinea single brought in the games first run.
Chinea worked his way into scoring position, and came across with the Patriots second run on a Cerda single. Chris Coipel, who had walked, also later scored, making it a a 3-0 lead.
TERRA tried to mount a comeback in the seventh. Down three, Luis Trujillo was hit by a pitch with one out. Angel Navarro then singled, and Ozzie Millet drove in Trujillo with a single of his own.
Kenney was able to wiggle out of the jam by getting Alec Ulloa to hit into a fielder’s choice to end the game.
TERRA will take a 1-1 record into their last game of the Adidas Diamond Classic against Somerset Academy. Florida Christian faces Somerset Friday, before closing the tournament with a match-up against LaSalle Saturday night.
