SLAM Edges Westminster Academy For District Win
Luis Padron scored the winning run on an error to lift SLAM to a 5-4 win over Westminster Academy in a 4A-7 matchup Tuesday. The win was the first in the district this season for the Titans (3-0), who faced the Lions (1-2) for the first time in their short history.
Jeter Downs, who finished 2-for-2, homered in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game. He also hit a double in the fourth and scored to make the score 4-3. SLAM’s Jose Garcia hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, bringing in Brian Frias. Frias had a lead-off single and finished the day 2-for-4.
The teams traded a pair of runs in the first inning. The Lions got their two when Zach Warienus reached on a hit-by-pitch and scored on an error, before Corey Acton reached on an error and scored on Ramon Ripoll’s sacrifice fly.
Westminster took a 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in the second and third. Warienus reached on an error and scored on another in the third, and Thomas Messer came home on Logan O’Neil’s RBI single in the fourth.
Blake Brattain pitched four and two-thirds innings, striking out six and allowing two hits while walking one to earn the win. Andres Santana, Brian Vargas and Padron also had hits for the Titans, who will be looking for their second district win when they travel to Hialeah Educational on Friday.
