Killian Blanks Southridge 1-0 in Pitchers’ Duel
It was a classic pitchers’ duel Tuesday night at Southridge as Killian did just enough to win 1-0 in a 9A-16 matchup. The Cougars (6-1) won their fifth in a row and maintain their district lead with a 3-0 mark. They got the winning run when Kyle Krtausch doubled in courtesy-runner Rahin Gaiter in the top of the seventh.
Junior right-handed pitcher Andrew Schreiber struck out 15, walked two and allowed three hits in a complete-game performance for the Cougars. He matched Spartans senior lefty Ralph Fernandez, who fanned 12, walked three and allowed three hits in six innings.
The Spartans (6-3, 1-2) attempted to a rally in the bottom of the inning. Anthony Vargas led off with a single, but the next two batters got out on a foul tip and strikeout. Fernandez singled and Brandon Abreu walked to load the bases. But Schreiber induced a groundout to end the game.
Things don’t get easier for Killian as the Cougars have a stretch with four more district games ahead of them. They’ll take on South Dade on Thursday, Palmetto on Tuesday and Coral Reef on March 10th.
The Spartans will face Homestead on Thursday and then Coral Reef on Tuesday in district matchups.
