Westwood Christian Holds Off Trinity Christian
Westwood Christian shortstop Nathan Pereira drove in Michael Mejias with a sac-fly RBI in the third and Westwood held on for a 4-3 win over Trinity Christian on Tuesday. With the possibility the two clubs could meet up in the 2A playoffs, Westwood (4-3) will have the confidence of having already beaten the defending 2A state champions.
Pereira had two RBIs overall, also connecting for an RBI single in the first. He brought his season total to seven RBIs.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Westwood Christian (4-3) quickly tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run home run from Peter Esposito, his fourth homer of the season. Esposito raised his season average to .417 by going 2-for-2 on the day.
Trinity Christian (6-4) took the lead in the top of the first inning with a RBI single and a run scored from Angel Tiburico, but that lead quickly evaporated on Esposito’s dinger. Now facing a two-run deficit in the fifth inning, Trinity pulled to within one with an RBI double from Kaeber Rog.
After giving up three runs, two earned, in the first, Marco Morales settled down nicely to strike out six batters over five innings of work to pick up his second win of the season. Raul Alvarez came in to pitch the final two innings, striking out three batters to pick up the save, his first of the season.
The victory snapped Trinity Christian’s five-game winning streak and gave Westwood Christian its second win in a row just ahead of a big district match up against Miami Christian.
