Columbus Blanks Palmetto To Advance To Regional Finals
Columbus used a strong pitching performance from Anthony Arguelles and some timely hitting to hold off Palmetto, 3-0, in a rain-shortened 9A Region 4 semifinals playoff game Tuesday night at Columbus High School.
Arguelles pitched a five-inning complete game, allowing just one hit to the Panthers, who finish their season with a record of 23-5. Branden Abreu came up with the only hit for Palmetto off of Arguelles, who consistently got ahead on Panthers’ hitters, striking out two while raising his record this season to 9-1.
Columbus (21-5) will take on the winner of the other regional semifinal match, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, between Miami Beach and Hialeah.
The regional finals game is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The Explorers managed just five hits off Palmetto starter Ryan MacInnes, including one each from Matt Alfonso and Chris Bohrer, who drove in a run. MacInnes went four-and-two-third innings, striking out five.
Columbus pushed across single runs in the first, second, and fifth innings, and that was enough firepower to give Arguelles all the cushion he would need.
Sebastian Serralta blasted a solo home run in the second inning, and Albert Espinosa also drove in a run for the Explorers.
