Miami Beach Rally Leads To 4-3 Win Over Coral Park
It has been a roller coaster season so far for Miami Beach, one that has been marked by some tough losses. After starting the season with three straight losses, and then going 2-2 in their next four, Monday’s match up with Coral Park became a big one.
The Hi-Tides erased a 3-2 deficit with a run each in the fourth and fifth, and then held on to defeat the Rams 4-3.
“This was a significant game for us,” said Beach Manager Charlie Garcia. “We have had four one-run losses already this year, so it was nice to be able to turn the tables and win one of these one-run games.”
Each team came out swinging in this one. Coral Park struck first in the top of the first when Anthony Lopez led off the game with a single. David Fresco then reached on an error, and Jorge Fernandez was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with nobody out.
A fielder’s choice ground ball and an error gave the Rams a 2-0 lead. Beach starting pitcher Russell Royce then worked out the jam, holding the score at 2-0.
In their half of the first, the Hi-Tides had an answer. One-out singles by Adrian Corniel and Jacob Gaynor, followed by a ground out cut the lead to 2-1. Yeiber Vivas then tied the game with an infield single.
two walks, a single by Elian Henriquez, and a hit batter reclaimed the lead for Coral Park in the third inning.
An error in the fourth allowed the Hi-Tides to tie the game at three.
In the fifth, Beach took the lead for good when Brody Minick singled, and later came scored on a Vivas single. On the day, Vivas was 2-for-3, with two RBIs.
From there, it was Hudson Koczwara and Daniel Garcia closing out the Rams in the final two frames. Koczwara picked up the win, and Garcia the save.
The win improves the Beach record to 3-5, having won two of their past three.
“This was a big win for us to gain some momentum,” said Garcia. “Coral Park is a tough team, and it was a good game. I am glad we finally were able to win one of these one-run games. We have Coral Gables tomorrow, and that should be another tough game.”
In addition to Coral Gables, the Hi-Tides face Miami #3 Southwest Friday night.
For Coral Park, the loss drops them to 1-6-1, and sets up a big game at home against St. Brendan on Friday afternoon.
