LaSalle Breaks Into Win Column With Win Over Downtown Doral
Hector Sosa threw a five-inning complete game shutout and helped himself at the plate with two hits and a pair of RBIs to lead LaSalle Royal to a 10-0 win over Downtown Doral on Tuesday at St. Thomas University.
Sosa gave up just three hits and walked only one while striking out two. He kick-started the Lions’ offense as well with a two-run single in a three-run first inning.
“He shut them down in big moments when runners got into scoring position,” LaSalle Royal manager Nathan Gomez said. “It was just a good overall day defensively. Both teams were playing for their first win of the year and it was nice to see the kids just put one together and get some confidence going into the next game.
“It’s a very young group this year. We’ve got a lot of sophomores starting for the first time. So, we’re just trying to learn how to win and this was a good step in the right direction. Hats off to Downtown Doral, they’re a very young team and they competed hard the whole way through.”
The Lions made it 5-0 in the fourth inning when Jeremy Fornos scored on an error and Jonny Quintana crossed the plate on the back end of a double steal. Quintana highlighted a five-run fifth inning that put the game out of reach with a two-run double. He finished with two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Fornos, meanwhile, also scored three times, collected two of the Lions’ 10 hits, and drove in a run from the top of the lineup.
“We had some key hits from seniors Jaime Luna and William Fornos,” Gomez noted.
Nicholas Trontz, Luna and Daniel Gonzalez also scored runs for the Lions, who improved to 1-3 for the season. The Lions look to keep things going when they take on Marathon at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Tamiami Park (Field #3).
Fernando Quinones, Jean Franco Moreno and Gabriel Moreno recorded hits for Downtown Doral, now 0-7 for the season.
“We came out and had energy the first inning, but essentially the game came down to making routine plays and we weren’t able to do that today,” Downtown Doral manager Alex Bravo said. “We have some things to work on in tomorrow’s practice. We just couldn’t keep them out of big innings.”
“Credit to their pitcher. He came out and attacked hitters with strikes. We got a few hits here and there; we just weren’t able to put them together for a big inning. Credit to their team. They came out and put the ball in play throughout their lineup. It’s something we’ve been kind of preaching for out team as well. We’ve got to work on the small details of defensive mental errors. We’ve got to minimize them.”
The Dolphins face Southwest in an 11 a.m. Thursday game at loanDepot Park.
