Mater Lakes Closes Out 7-3 Win Over Miami Christian
Mater Lakes opened up a close game with three runs in the fourth inning and those were the final runs scored in the Bears’ 7-3 win over Miami-Dade #3 Miami Christian on Wednesday night at Miami-Dade North.
The Bears broke it open in the fourth on an RBI-single by Andres Gomez, scoring Taisuky Rodriguez, who opened the floodgates with a double, a run-scoring double by Andre Suarez that plated Gomez, and a bases-loaded walk to Bobby Torres that allowed courtesy runner Alejandro Napoles to cross the plate.
Both offenses produced early runs. Mater Lakes scored in each of the first four innings. The Bears answered Miami Christian’s first-inning run by Ronny Cruz with two of their own in the bottom half. They made it 3-1 with a run in the second inning before Miami Christian tied it with a pair of runs in the third inning.
The Victors drew even when Alejandro Abreut (2-3, 3 RBI) slapped a two-run single, chasing home Willy Mendez (2-4) and Fabio Peralta (walk).
But the Bears answered, taking the lead for good with a run in the bottom half of the third. Suarez was hit by a pitch and scored the go-ahead run on an error. They put the game away an inning later as neither team could muster a score past the fourth inning.
That’s because the Bears got excellent relief work from Vladii Baldepina. The junior right-hander worked the final 2.2 innings allowing just two hits and no runs.
Jeffred Fermin (five strikeouts) and Hector Escobar combined for three hitless innings of relief for Miami Christian. The Victors (13-4) visit Belen Jesuit for a 6 p.m. Thursday, April 18 game.
Mater Lakes starter Alfrin Rosario drove in a run and got the win. The junior right-hander worked 4.1 innings, allowing just three hits while striking out three. He yielded just one earned run.
The Bears (10-9) are at J.C. Bermudez for a 3:30 p.m. Thursday game.
