Key West Shuts Out Killian to Win District 2A-16 Crown
For the third straight season, the Key West Conchs are district champions.
Thanks to some late offense that broke up a scoreless battle, the Conchs edged the Killian Cougars, 2-0, to win the District 2A-16 championship on Thursday. Key West also won district titles in 2022 and 2023, and once again the Conchs are on to the regional playoffs. They will host the Jensen Beach Falcons (16-11) on Wednesday night at Rex Weech Stadium in Key West.
Senior Jacob Burnham nearly went the distance to earn the win, as he recorded all but the final out on the mound. The left-hander scattered six hits and two walks, and he had five strikeouts. Felix Ong recorded the save by striking out the only batter he faced for the last out in the seventh.
Free passes led to disaster for Killian in the bottom of the fifth, as Sam Holland and Noah Burnham both walked to start the inning. Auggy Davilla laid down a sacrifice bunt that advanced the runners, and Nelson Ong came through with the clutch hit on an RBI single up the first base line. Roman Garcia also plated an insurance run with an RBI single later in the frame.
