Miami Christian Threepeats As District Champions
For a team with championship aspirations every season, the Miami Christian baseball team knows that the road to states is more manageable if you win your district. While the Victors (18-4) were all but assured of being included in the field of regional playoff teams either way, they made sure of it on Thursday with an 8-0 shutout over the Miami Brito Panthers to win the District 2A-16 trophy.
Miami Christian will now host the Dade Christian Crusaders (14-12) in a Region 2A-4 quarterfinal on Wednesday afternoon. The Crusaders won the District 2A-15 title with a 14-9 win over the Schoolhouse Prep Wolfpack. Miami Brito (13-12) also earned an at-large berth into the regional playoffs, and the Panthers will travel to face the Westminster Academy Lions (14-12) on Wednesday night.
Jeffred Fermin led the way for the Victors on the mound, throwing six shutout innings to earn the victory. Fermin allowed just two hits and three walks, and he struck out seven. Hector Escobar struck out one in a scoreless seventh to close it out.
The Victors scored a run in the first and three in the second to take control early, and then added two more runs in the fifth and sixth to cement the win. Willy Mendez was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs, and Ray Yero went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run. Christian De Los Santos was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Kevin Bruno was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
