Doral Academy Rallies In 6th For Comeback Over COHEA

Aaron Elissalt went the distance and struck out eight for the Firebirds, earning the win when his offense rallied in the sixth.
At a pivotal point in the early season, the Doral Academy Firebirds rallied late for an important victory on Thursday afternoon. Held scoreless and trailing 1-0, the Firebirds scored all of their runs during a big sixth inning and then held on for a 3-1 decision over the COHEA Bulldogs.
Doral improves to 5-2, which is a significant difference from the 4-3 mark that a loss would have led to.
“It’s been a tough start for us,” Firebirds Manager Ralph Suarez said. “We’re missing one of the top players, who is a North Carolina commit. He’s a great pitcher and a great hitter. Hopefully, we get him back sometime next week.”
Doral will look to carry some momentum by that time, after picking up its third straight win, with one more game to go this week.
It was freshman Bryan Mesa who delivered the winning run to complete Thursday’s comeback. Fabio Marquez led off the inning with a base hit to left field, before being replaced on the bases by courtesy-runner Bryan Ravelo. Kobe Carrion followed with a single to left, and Gabriel Milano laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved both base runners into scoring position. George Pardo then smacked a two-RBI double to center, before he came home with the deciding run when Mesa connected for an RBI single to left.

Bryan Ravelo scored in the sixth for the Firebirds.
Senior Aaron Elissalt earned the win, after he gave his team a strong performance with a complete-game outing. The right-hander gave up a run in the top of the second when Rolando Mena led off with a double and later scored thanks to a balk call. But from there on Elissalt was a force, piling up seven strikeouts while scattering five hits and a walk over his seven full innings.
Bulldogs starter Joshua Cardoso also gave an impressive performance with a quality start. The senior right-hander struck out 11 over six-and-two-third innings of work, while allowing four hits and walking two.
Bryan Gonzalez was 2-for-3 for COHEA, the only batter on the day with multiple hits.
