Westminster Christian Bats Come Alive In Win Over Southwest

In 2024, Westminster Christian was one game, and a couple of innings, away from winning another in their long line of state championships, eventually dropping the state final 5-4 to North Broward Prep. So the theme of the 2025 season was an easy one. Get back to the title game, and finish the deal.

On Tuesday, the Warriors took their first significant step towards that goal. After the starting the season with some uneven performances, Westminster put it all together, defeating Southwest 12-2.

“Great team win today, against a great program,” said Westminster Manager Emil Castellanos.

The Knights showed early on that they were ready to play in this one. They used two singles, two walks, and an error to plate three runs and take the early lead.

After giving up one run in the top of the second, the Warriors went back to work offensively. A Landon Tews double in the second made it 4-1, and a James Suarez single in the fourth made it 6-1. Westminster would tack on two more in the fourth, for an 8-1 lead.

On the mound for Westminster, Austin Wiegandt did most of the heavy lifting, going the first four innings, allowing only two runs. After Westminster scored four more runs in the fourth, Billy Comber closed out the game with a scoreless inning in the fifth.

“Austin had a great day on the mound, and at the plate,” said Castellanos. “JJ (Godoy) also had a big day for us, with that home run.”

It has been tough to figure out the Warriors early in the season. They lost their opener to Spanish River, before going on the road to defeat one of Miami’s top teams, Doral. After two more wins, they dropped a game to Miami Springs, and tied Mater Lakes Academy. The win Tuesday gets them moving back in the right direction.

The Warriors will close out the week Wednesday versus Keys Gate Charter. They also have their annual ‘Be The Light’ charity game coming up against Columbus next week.

Despite the uneven start to the year, Westminster has traditionally been a team that peaks at the right time down the stretch, and they expect this season to be no different.

“It is a long season, and we know that at the end, the boys will be ready, and be where we want to be heading into the playoffs,” said Castellanos.
