Solis Pitches CG As Belen Beats Hialeah-Miami Lakes For District Championship
Christian Solis dealt a complete game one-hitter and Willy Fabra knocked in the go-ahead run on a soaring sacrifice fly as the Belen Jesuit Wolverines captured the 6A District 16 championship with a 5-1 win over the Hialeah-Miami Lakes Trojans on Wednesday.
Nick Hernandez tied the game with an RBI groundout and Joey Rodriguez drove in a run for Belen, which overcame an early 1-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.
“I like that we we didn’t hold our heads down,” Belen head coach Jerry Albert said. “We have a lot of trust in our batters, a lot of trust in our pitcher. We knew that as long as (Solis) could keep us close, we could do some damage.”
Solis did better than that, stifling the Trojans over the final six frames. He seemed to be getting stronger as the game went on, never even allowing the tying run to get to the plate after taking the lead.
“Throw strikes,” Solis said about his approach on the mound. “We played them before, and they like to slap the ball and hit it on the ground. Our team is pretty good defensively, so I just wanted them to make contact.”
Albert pointed to the leadership of his seniors as the reason for his team’s continued success. Alex DeGoti, Nick Hernandez and Joey Rodriguez led by example, with trusty play on the field and patient at bats.
“Our seniors have been doing it for us all year long,” Albert said. “They had some huge hits and kept a steady glove in the field. Without them, there is no way we would have reached this far.”
The Trojans, on the other hand, fielded an extremely young team, with catcher Cris Calderon the lone senior on the squad.
“As a young team, we made extremely long strides,” Lakes coach Mario Marffy said. “The regionals will be an extremely fortunate experience for these guys, eight sophomores and eight juniors.”
Both Miami Lakes (14-9, 9-5) and Belen (19-8, 12-1) advance to the regionals, against either Pines Charter or Archbishop McCarthy.
HML will be a contender the next couple of years. Not only did they ELIMINATE the TOP SEEDED Mater Academy Lions killing their state championship hopes but they lost a well fought out game to Belen Jesuit. HML lead 1-0 through 4 innings but wasn’t able to capatilize the rest of the game only getting 3 hits and one run. Don’t be surprised if HML contends for state championship run next year. Can’t wait to see these young guns play intheir first regional game in over 10 years next tuesday. Not to mention that they are accomplishing this with just 1 senior and 8 first year starters.
